Loft is a modern quilt pattern inspired by work by artists such as Josef Albers and Mark Rothko. The quilt design features a bold, clean pattern created with strip piecing and mitered squares. This quilt uses traditional construction methods. The pattern includes skill building tips for:

  • Mitered squares

  • Nesting seams

  • Precise ¼” seams

Bonus: The pattern includes tips on how to sew this project without buying new fabric. I provide resources for finding second-hand fabric, upcycling and using your scraps. Video tutorial of mitered square construction.

The cover quilt was made with Ruby and Bee solids from Windham Fabrics (see photo for details).

The name of the quilt echoes back to artist lofts — a time when warehouses were used as inexpensive creative studios and living spaces by artists.

While the pattern leverages 2 ½” fabric strips, the design and construction (with the mitered square blocks) doesn’t lend itself well to using a precut fabric jelly roll. This pattern is also not suitable for directional fabrics.

  • Three size: CRIB (36" x 58"), THROW (48" x 64"), FULL (80" x 96"), QUEEN (90” x 108”)

  • This pattern is not suitable for directional fabrics.
